Information we collect
When you use InkTwist, we collect the following kinds of information:
- Account details. Your name, email address, and the identifier from your Google or Apple account. We receive these through Firebase Authentication, our sign-in provider, when you sign in.
- Content you submit. Your story inputs (what your character says and does), the words and sentences you look up translations for, your flashcard activity, and any feedback you send us.
- Usage data.Events about how you use the app, application errors, and session recordings (replays of how you interact with the app’s interface), collected through PostHog. We also collect aggregate page analytics through Vercel Analytics. All of this data is kept anonymous, and is not tagged with your identity such as your name or email address.
- On-device data.Reader preferences such as font size, theme, and reading position stay in your browser’s localStorage on your device. Your sign-in session is kept in your browser’s local storage, and a cookie remembers your interface-language preference.
How we use your information
We use the information described above for a few specific purposes:
- Providing the service. Your story choices and writing are sent to AI model providers to generate story content and translations. We save your stories so you can return to them, track your learning progress, and use your review history to schedule flashcards at the right time.
- Operating your account. We use your sign-in details to create your account, sign you in, and keep your data tied to you.
- Understanding usage and fixing problems. Anonymised analytics, error reports, and session recordings show us how InkTwist is used, help us diagnose bugs, and guide improvements to the experience.
We do not sell your personal information, and we don’t use it for third-party advertising.
Third-party services
InkTwist relies on a small number of service providers to run. Each one receives only the data it needs to do its job:
- Firebase Authentication, a Google service, handles sign-in. When you sign in, it receives your name, your email address, and your Google or Apple account identifier.
- PostHog provides product analytics, running on PostHog’s US cloud. It receives usage events, error reports, and session recordings.
- Vercel hosts the web app. Vercel Analytics receives aggregate page-view data.
- Google Cloud (Firestore) stores your account data, your stories, and your learning progress.
- AI model providers (Google, Baseten, and Cerebras) receive story text and the inputs you write into stories, so they can generate stories and translations.
These providers may store data in the United States or other countries outside your own (and outside Australia), and each processes data under its own privacy terms.
Data retention
We keep your account data, your stories, and your learning progress for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from the Account page in the app: this immediately and permanently removes your account, data and uploaded files from our systems.
Your rights
No matter where you live, you can ask to see the personal information InkTwist holds about you, have it corrected, have it deleted, or get a copy in a portable format. Deletion is self-serve: use the Delete account button on the Account page in the app. For everything else, email hello@inktwist.ai from the address on your account (that’s how we verify it’s really you), and your request will be honored within a reasonable time.
If you’re in the EEA or the UK, the GDPR gives you these rights formally, along with the right to object to or restrict how your information is processed. You can also lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority, though we’d welcome the chance to sort things out directly first.
If you’re a California resident, the CCPA gives you similar rights to access, correct, and delete your information, and you won’t be treated any differently for using them. InkTwist doesn’t sell your personal information, in the everyday sense or in the broader ways the law defines “selling.” Whatever your request and wherever you are, the same inbox handles it: hello@inktwist.ai.
Children
InkTwist is for adults. Our Terms of Service require you to be at least 18 years old to create an account, and we don’t knowingly let anyone under 18 sign up. InkTwist is not directed to children, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has created an account, please email us at hello@inktwist.ai and we’ll delete the account and its data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time as InkTwist evolves or as our data practices change. Whenever we do, we’ll update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page so you can see when the policy last changed.
For material changes, especially any that expand what data we collect or how we use it, we’ll give you reasonable advance notice, such as a notice in the app or an email to the address associated with your account. If you keep using InkTwist after a change takes effect, the updated policy applies to your use of the service.
